Our History

Helston Engineering Ltd was founded in April 1977 by Alan Belcher.

Alan was born in Darlaston in 1938 after a formal education he attended Wednesbury technical collage and then on to Joseph Sankey to serve his engineering apprenticeship. After a couple of years break to do his National Service, Alan returned to engineering working his way up to become Chief estimator at Boulton Paul Aircraft (Wolverhampton) where he was involved in the weight and balance calculations on the English Electric Lightning Jet Fighter. He moved to chief estimator and rep at The Aluminium Bronze Company (Walsall). After they closed down he moved to work as a rep for a company called High Duty Alloys in Slough before returning to the Black Country to work for the Phosphor Bronze Company in Birmingham.

In April 1977, with help from his wife Elizabeth, Alan set up in business as Helston Engineering Ltd in an old leather factory in Walsall in the West Midlands. Alan was an old style Engineer who set great store in the quality of work, fairness and providing a service to the customer that they could rely on.

He was shortly joined by his two sons Michael and Robert who worked well with him and to this day share the same work ethics. They quickly out grew their first factory and moved to larger premises providing quality machined parts to an ever demanding market.

As the years have passed Helston Engineering Ltd have grown in size whilst maintaining the same standards Alan set and now are looking forward to the future in an ever changing market place.

Machinery

Machinery

Helston Engineering Ltd has produced a variety of special purpose machinery. Working along side the customer’s designers and using our knowledge of production techniques to ensure optimum quality, usability and economy. Machines produced over the years have been used for many different applications from the production of exhaust systems for cars to the processing of foodstuffs and testing systems for architectural hardware.

A 5 axis laser machine was developed with the Assay Office in Birmingham with repeatability accuracy to better than 0.001 of an inch. An identification number can be etched by a laser on to one of the facets of a diamond; this was developed to reduce the illegal trade known as growing diamonds. One ton, six ton and twenty ton hydraulic presses were also developed for the Assay Office replacing antiquated hand operated ‘fly presses’ increasing production in the stamping of the Assay mark and reducing RSI in the work force.

A night light wax pellet rotary press and wick making machine were made to produce night lights to be used in underdeveloped countries. The night light would produce much needed light, warmth and a heat source for cooking. Also a conveyer system was made to help in the handling of boxes in a transport dispatch office.

The various applications and functions of the machines we have been asked to produce over the years have each set unique challenges, which we have had to meet and have therefore increased not only our satisfaction on successful completion but also contributed to the depth of our experience.

Vintage parts that are no longer available such as nuts, bolts, castings and drive ancillaries have been produced to drawing or sample. Brass instrument panels and cockpit parts have been produced as well as offering a polishing and chrome plating service to add that final touch. For cars that have wire wheels we own the entire original dies for all the ‘Knock on’ hub caps.
